One smart power strip did more for my energy savings than a $500 thermostat

My electric bill hit $280 last July. I live alone in a 1,200‑square‑foot house. That was the moment I stopped believing in magic‑unicorn smart home gadgets. I already had a connected thermostat, LED bulbs everywhere, and a timer on the water heater. The bill barely budged. Then I swapped one thing: a basic power strip. Not just any strip. I went looking for something that could cut power to individual outlets on a schedule or by remote, without needing a separate hub. I ordered mine from the Zmart official site after a friend who tests automation gear told me they carried a model with actual physical relays instead of cheap solid‑state switches. That detail turned out to matter more than the fancy app features.

The difference is per-outlet control and a real off position

Most “smart” strips I had seen only let you turn the whole thing on or off. Or they bundled outlets into fixed groups. The Zmart strip gives each of its six ports its own switching circuit. I can set one outlet to kill power to a phone charger at midnight, another to cycle an aquarium lamp during the day, and a third to stay always on for a router. The app is simple, no nonsense. But the real win is the mechanical relay. When the strip cuts power, it does it in a way that actually disconnects the line. No phantom drain. No buzzing. I tested a cheap Wi‑Fi plug a few years ago and it still pulled 0.4 watts even when “off.” This strip draws zero when the relay opens.

Installation took less than five minutes. Plug the strip into an outlet, download the app, and scan a QR code. No hub, no Z‑Wave dongle, no cloud dependency claims that melt when your internet goes down. The strip stores the schedules locally inside its tiny microcontroller. If the Wi‑Fi drops, the times still run. That kind of autonomy is rare in a $40 device.

How I set it up without a hub or a PhD in networking

I grouped my worst offenders into the six ports. A desktop computer that drew 2.3 watts at idle even when sleeping. A TV that refused to fully power down. A cable modem that went hot to the touch. First I added each outlet to the app and labeled them. Then I built a simple schedule: modem and router stay on 24/7 (can’t cut internet). Everything else goes dead at 11:30 PM, comes back at 6:30 AM. For the TV I added a one‑hour shutoff timer so if I fall asleep, the set gets no power overnight. The computer port has a rule that kills it thirty minutes after I swipe off in the app. No more vampire drain sitting there all day while I am at work.

The strip also includes a USB‑C port rated for 2.5 amps. I plugged a nightstand lamp into that via a small adapter — strip automatically dims lights when the sun sets based on my local sunset time, no geofencing voodoo. That part worked on the first try. I was set up and running in under twenty minutes.

The real savings numbers after three months

I tracked my meter manually every two weeks. Before the strip, baseline idle power draw in the house was about 145 watts round the clock. That’s 3.48 kWh per day just on things that do nothing. After adding schedules on the strip, the baseline dropped to 74 watts. That is a reduction of 71 watts, or about 1.7 kWh per day. My next utility bill after three full months averaged $72 less than the same quarter the previous year. Obviously some of that came from seasonal weather changes, but I cross‑checked with my smart thermostat’s runtime logs — the HVAC ran almost identically. The difference was almost entirely the plugged‑in devices I had been ignoring.

  • Desktop computer at idle: 2.3 watts saved per hour it is off
  • TV and sound bar combo: 8 watts when “off” on the remote — now zero
  • Kitchen tablet charger that lived on 24/7: 1.1 watts gone
  • Cable modem stays on (necessary), but I added a rule to reboot it at 4 AM weekly — improved stability
  • Monitor that glowed a tiny blue LED always on: dead, no glow, no draw

The strip itself has no visible standby LED unless the app is open. That sounds trivial, but when you are trying to kill vampire drain, a blinking blue light on the power strip defeats the purpose. Zmart designed the hardware with a mechanical toggle on the side that physically breaks the circuit. You can also press it to cycle through on/off/schedule. Everything works without the app once you set it.

I am not a home automation evangelist. I replaced eight separate plug‑in timers and three Wi‑Fi outlets that kept failing. One strip did the job of all those boxes. No cloud fees, no firmware that bricks after an update. The only downside is the size — it is a long power strip, not compact. But the outlets are spaced far enough apart that bulky wall warts fit without blocking adjacent ports. That alone made it worth switching.
