Building a Sandpit That Gets Used Every Day

A sandpit is one of the highest-value additions to any garden, and one of the most frequently abandoned. The ones that get used daily for years differ from the ones that become a cat toilet by the end of the first summer in a handful of practical ways.

Size and Position

Most home sandpits are too small. A pit large enough for two children to work in without colliding, roughly a metre and a half square as a minimum, produces far more sustained play than a moulded plastic tray.

Position matters as much. Partial shade is ideal, since full sun makes the sand uncomfortably hot by midday and full shade keeps it permanently damp. Somewhere visible from the house means play can happen without an adult standing over it, which is when the best play happens.

What to Put In It

  • A decent metal spade rather than a flimsy plastic one, sized to the child
  • Two or three buckets in different sizes
  • Vehicles robust enough to be buried and hosed off
  • Containers, funnels and lengths of pipe for pouring and channelling
  • Access to water, which transforms what sand can do

Weight matters for the vehicles more than most people expect. A hollow plastic truck skids across the surface, while a steel-bodied machine loaded with wet sand digs in and requires genuine effort to move, which is precisely the physical resistance children are seeking. Ranges built for this kind of use, such as Tonka, are designed to be buried and rinsed rather than kept clean.

Depth and Sand

Depth of at least twenty to thirty centimetres is needed for real digging. Anything shallower and children hit the bottom immediately, which ends the activity.

Use proper play sand rather than builder’s sand, which stains clothing badly and can contain unwanted material. Play sand is washed, graded and considerably more pleasant to handle.

Water Is the Missing Ingredient

Dry sand pours and does very little else. Wet sand holds shape, supports tunnels, forms channels and behaves completely differently, and the transition between the two states is one of the more interesting things a young child can investigate.

A watering can, a hose within reach or simply a bucket refilled by the child expands the possibilities enormously. It also creates mess, which is the trade-off.

Covers and Maintenance

A cover is essential and primarily about cats. A fitted cover, a tarpaulin weighted at the edges or a hinged lid all work; what matters is that it goes on reliably rather than being a nuisance.

Some airflow is better than a fully sealed cover, since permanently damp sand becomes sour. Raking the sand over periodically, topping it up annually and replacing it entirely every few years keeps it usable.

Accept That Sand Travels

It will come indoors. A brush by the door, play clothes and a rule about shoes handle most of it, and attempting to prevent it entirely usually results in the sandpit being used less.

Of all the equipment a garden can contain, a sandpit generates the most play per pound spent. A degree of grit in the hallway is a reasonable price.
